The Berlin wall was built in 1961 by Communists in order to stop people from fleeing the ‘Communist Paradise’ of Eastern Europe. However, those behind the wall faced poverty, destruction and terror. The tearing down of the Berlin Wall on November 9th 1989 ultimately led to the fall of the Iron Curtain.
As we celebrate the fall of the wall and of communism, we are in the midst of a serious economic crisis. Some cast doubt on the far-reaching economic reforms implemented in Eastern and Central Europe. How has Europe changed after the fall of the Berlin wall? What were the effects of the economic reforms? Which steps are the most relevant ahead for Eastern and Central Europe?
These questions will be discussed and answered at a seminar hosted by the European Enterprise Institute and the Institute for the Information on the Crimes of Communism.
You are cordially invited to attend this seminar and discussion reflecting on the dangers and crimes of communism as well as examining what challenges and opportunities lie ahead for Eastern Europe.
The speakers will include:
Mr Gunnar Hökmark, MEP
Mr Tunne Kelam, MEP
Mr Josef Szajer, MEP
Ms Emilie Boman, EEI
