EEI expert speaks about global trade
May, 2005
"The dollar’s
current weakness against the euro is not an "historical aberration,"
nor does it represent a radical change from recent US dollar policy."
According to EEI Policy Counsel Mr. Horner.
The
remark came at the Jyske Bank Headquarters in Silkeborg, Denmark where
Mr. Horner appeared as a panel expert at the AmCham Denmark’s Executive
Forum on the "The Effects of a Weak Dollar on Global Trade" in Jutland,
Denmark.
In
closing remarks Mr. Horner said that although echange rates fluctuate
over time, the current weaker dollar – down 50% against the euro's low
in 2002, but only 14% against the euro's introduction rate of $1.18 in
1999 – has meant more exports for the U.S. However, Mr. Horner
cautioned that expressly abandoning the 10-year-old "strong dollar"
policy would risk of "undermining the confidence in the dollar would
risk promoting an exodus from U.S. bonds and pushing up long-term
interest rates".
